Cholinesterase {CHE} test
Definition :
– CHE is an enzyme synthesized by liver and distributed along the body It hydrolyses acetylcholine and succinylcholine.
– This enzyme activity is inhibited reversibly by carbamate insecticides and irreversibly organophosphorus insecticides so this test is most interest clinically in the detection of possible insecticide poisoning.
Clinical significance:
Increased in :Type IV hyperlipoproteinemia, nephrosis, obesity with DM , and breast cancer. –
– Decreased in: organophosphorus insecticide poisoning, hepatitis cirrhosis, hepatoma, anemia, MI and post-surgery.
Order the test:
emergency room, intensive care unit, internist doctors.

Kinetic / butyrylthiocholine
Normal range:
4900-11900 U/L
Limitation:
CHE decrease in pregnancy by 20%.-
– Some drugs are reduced the result like: anabolic steroids, estrogens, testosterone and radio graphic agents .
