Gamma glutamyltransferase {GGT} TEST
Definition :-
– GGT is a biliary excretory enzyme that catalyze the transfer of glutamyl group from peptide to another , across cellular membrane.
– It is found in liver , kidney , pancreas , brain , heart , salivary & prostate gland.It is useful to distinguish the liver disease , hepatocellular or biliary obstruction.
-It also help to differentiate ALP from bone or biliary tree.
Clinical significance:-
– Increased in :- Obstructive liver disease and less increase in cirrhosis, inflammation of liver, renal transplant, hyperthyroidism , DM , pancereatitis , CHF , MI , and SLE.
-Decreased in :- hypothyroidism.

Fasting 8 hours
Methodology:-
Kinetic /L- glutamyl-p-nitroanilide.
Guiding Reference Value:
M 11- 49 U/L
F 7 – 32 U/L
Limitation :-
– GGT is more sensitive indicator of liver diseases than ALP especially in children and early-risk drinkers.
– Some drugs cause elevation of GGT levels include :- cephalosporin , estrogen , ethanol , phyntoin , and phenobarbital.
– And some drugs reduce the levels such as ; Ascorbic acid.
