Total Protein Test
Total protein measurements can reflect nutritional status and may be used to screen for and help diagnose kidney disease, liver disease, and many other conditions. A total serum protein test measures the total amount of protein in the blood. It also measures the amounts of two major groups of proteins in the blood: albumin and globulin.
Specimen
- Serum or plasma.
- The only acceptable anticoagulants are heparin and EDTA.
Specimen Preparation and Stability
Patients should be following their usual diet and be in their usual state of health. Specimen may be stored at 2-80C prior to analysis.
Serum total protein is reported to be stable for at least 3 days at 2-80C and 6 months at –200C.
